Welcome to Air Conditioning and Refrigeration!
You will find this career to be both rewarding and challenging. I have been in this industry since I was a child, my dad was an HVAC contractor, therefore, I was in the AC/R industry.
I went through the Cypress College AC/R program myself, then continued on to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for my engineering degree. I have worked in various aspects of the HVAC industry, from residential A/C up to 1000 ton chiller systems in multi-story buildings. I’ve also been involved in the supermarket refrigeration industry.
Being from Cal Poly, our program is based on the philosophy of “learn by doing”. Therefore we put the theory from lectures into practice in the laboratory. Further, our program focuses on Commercial and Industrial applications.
AC/R 105 – Basic electrical for Air Conditioning and Refrigeration
Seventy percent of the problems with air conditioning systems are electrically related. To understand air conditioning, you have to know electrical!
Course Description
This course is a basic study of the mechanical vapor compression refrigeration cycle and system components. Classes include lectures with practical demonstrations and hands-on experience including laboratory projects.
Course Materials
- Textbooks: AHRI Fundamentals of HVAC/R, 1st Edition by Carter Standfield and David Skaves.
- Supplies: Calculator (Standard math functions).
- Straight Edge (ruler).
- USB Flash drive memory stick.
Instruction
- Lectures and note taking.

- Hands on demonstrations and projects
- Homework, written and schematic drawings
- Media presentations.
- On-line activities.
Your Grade is Based On:
- Homework: drawings, reading and on-line exercises.
- Weekly quizzes consisting of schematic drawing, problem solving, multiple choice, fill-in-the blank questions, true/false answers, oral answers to oral questions.
- Midterm exam consisting of schematic drawing, problem solving, multiple choice, fill-in-the blank questions, true/false answers, oral answers to oral questions.
- Final exam consisting of converting a written electrical objective into a wiring schematic diagram, problem solving, multiple choice, fill-in-the blank questions, true/false answers, oral answers to oral questions with a hands-on wiring demonstration in the laboratory.
- Work ethic grade will be evaluated on: class participation; attendance; on-time arrival to class; promptness of project completion; neatness and pride of workmanship of all assignments; end of class clean-up responsibilities; tool room responsibilities; classroom attitude; willingness to help other students requesting extra help and modeling safety in rules and procedures.
